Program.

Thanks for joining us for our ninth annual Gold Coast Music Awards. Let’s get ready to celebrate!

This year’s awards garnered a record breaking 937 nominations from across a huge diversity of genres and ages. The judges, as usual, faced a monumental task listening to hour upon hour of singles and albums and watching some of the best music videos in the country. The 18 members of the independent judging panel carefully consider each nomination and work together to ensure the pool of finalists and winners represent the depth and diversity of talent across our beloved city.

People often refer to the music industry as an ecosystem. And ecosystems thrive when each of its parts is well nourished, supported and resilient. The Gold Coast Music Awards are part of an annual program of sector-building initiatives taking place in this city, supported by a large number of individuals, corporations, communities and the City of Gold Coast. That program helps keep our music ecosystem flourishing and every single part of that ecosystem is critical: our humble Blank Street Press, through to venues, tour managers, music stores, writers and photographers, ticketing agents, musicians, labels and publishers, sound engineers, stage managers, recording studios, educators, designers, radio announcers, lighting and staging companies, policy makers, riggers and roadies, security, punters and fans.

Gold Coast’s music industry is stronger when we all work together and the Awards are as much about celebrating our collective success as they are about celebrating the artists kicking massive goals and repping the city while they do it. We’re humbled that so many people throw their weight behind the Awards every year. Our supportive and generous community of partners and contributors really keep this music ecosystem humming. We can’t thank you enough for what you do to support live music on the Gold Coast.

Sam, Chloe and Amanda

About our judges

Gold Coast Music Awards would not be possible without the dedication of many people in the local industry, but it’s our judges who give the most. Hours and hours of streaming songs, albums and videos, reading reams and reams of nomination information, cross-checking against criteria and then meeting for a full day to pull it all together. It’s a mammoth task and we’re deeply indebted to this awesome group of people for their massive contribution.

About the trophies

The now iconic trophy for the Gold Coast Music Awards was created in 2015 by Dion Parker who was engaged by SWELL Sculpture Festival to design something unique for the new event. The brief was pretty vague. As an organising team we knew we didn’t want a surfboard mounted on a piece of driftwood. We wanted something that would leave no doubt that the Gold Coast music industry had arrived and we were doing things differently to any other city. Don’t know about you, but we reckon Dion completely nailed that brief.

Every year, we also work with SWELL Sculpture Festival to commission a one-off trophy for the People’s Choice Awards. This year Emily Rose Hastie has created a stunning hand carved artwork titled the ‘Golden Whistler’.

The Golden Whistler is a native bird indigenous to South East Queensland known for its beautiful song. The Golden Whistler People’s Choice trophy is a hand carved piece of camphor laurel finished with acrylic paint using a striking colour palette.
